California Statewide Fire Summary for September 11, 2021 

September 11, 2021 - More than 13,400 firefighters continue to work towards containment on 13 major wildfires burning across California. Yesterday, firefighters also responded to 65 new wildfires, quickly Cal Firebringing full containment to all. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 7,341 wildfires, which have burned more than 2.2 million acres. In comparison, during this same time last year, there were 8,043 fires, which burned more than 3.1 million acres in California. Over the past couple days thunderstorms brought thousands of lightning strikes across California. While many areas experienced a small amount of rain, over a dozen small fires were sparked and quickly contained. Firefighters will continue to monitor for new fires sparked by lightning. Yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom requested a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration to assist wildfire response and recovery efforts for the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County.

In Northern California, weak upper-level ridging will move onshore today bringing lighter winds but also bringing a warming and drying trend. A weak upper-level trough moving into the pacific northwest tomorrow will moderate the warming and drying and bring a modest increase in on shore flow and afternoon northwest to southwest winds. In Southern California, strong high pressure will sit over the desert southwest through the middle of next week. Temperatures will remain 5 to 10 degrees above normal through the middle of next week.
