California Statewide Fire Summary for September 15, 2021

September 15, 2021 - More than 10,500 firefighters continue to work towards containment on 14 major wildfires and one extended attack wildfire burning in California. Yesterday, firefighters also responded to 23 Cal Firenew wildfires, all of which were quicky contained. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 7,450 wildfires, which have burned more than 2.26 million acres. In comparison, during this same time last year, there were 8,143 fires, which burned more than 3.3 million acres in California. The United States Forest Service announced they will end the regional closure order affecting National Forests in California at 11:59 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 15, ending two days prior than originally announced. Forest-wide closures remain in place for the Los Padres, Angeles, San Bernardino, and Cleveland National Forests in Southern California due to local weather and fire factors.

In the northern part of the state, high risk for strong winds and low relative humidity for the crest eastward through Friday. Weak ridging and troughs through Thursday, then a stronger Pacific trough and jet stream late Friday through the weekend followed by a pacific ridge early next week. High temperatures slightly above normal today, then cooling to near normal Thursday and Friday. In the southern part of the state, high pressure will continue to sit over the desert southwest through today. A weak area of low pressure will approach the region from the west tomorrow, and then merge with a trough off the west coast that will move inland. Temperatures will remain quite warm and above average through Thursday

As crews contain the wildfires, evacuations will be lifted, and residents allowed to return home. There are many hazards to watch out for when you get to your property, and crews are still working in the area. To learn more about returning home after a wildfire, visit www.ReadyForWildfire.org.
