California Statewide Fire Summary for September 18, 2021

September 18, 2021 - More than 9,900 firefighters continue to work towards containment on 12 major wildfires and two extended attack wildfires burning in California. Yesterday, firefighters also responded to 22 new Cal Firewildfires. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 7,502 wildfires, which have burned more than 2.29 million acres. The U.S. Forest Service has these remaining national forest closures to include El Dorado, Los Padres, Angeles, San Bernardino, and Cleveland National Forests due to local weather and fire factors.

A Red Flag Warning in effect Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening for eastern Fresno, Tulare, and Kern Counties for critical fire weather due to low humidity and gusty winds, as well as a Red Flag Warning from 1pm to 8pm today in northeast California including parts of Lassen and Modoc Counties. A Fire Weather Watch issued Sunday night into Tuesday morning due to gusty winds and low humidity for portions of the Sacramento Valley and surrounding foothill and mountain terrain, as well as the North Bay Mountains and East Bay Hills. In Northern California, a pacific frontal system and accompanying precipitation will reach the north coast this afternoon and then continue south and east Saturday night through Sunday. In Southern California, A weak area of low pressure will get absorbed by a pacific trough as it approaches the west coast today and moves inland Sunday. Westerly afternoon and evening winds will surface across the wind prone mountain and desert areas this weekend. Temperatures will remain 5 to 10° below normal through this weekend.

Evacuation plans for families with young children as well as seniors and people with disabilities need unique consideration when preparing for a disaster or to quickly respond in case of fire. Prepare ahead of time by practicing your family’s fire escape plan, and what to do to be safe when there is a wildfire nearby.
