September 21, 2021 - More than 9,500 firefighters continue to gain ground on California’s 11 major wildfires and one extended attack wildfire. Crews across the state also responded to and quickly contained 9 new wildfires yesterday. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 7,575 wildfires that have burned more than 2.3 million acres in California.
A Red Flag Warning remains in effect through this morning due to gusty winds and low humidity for portions of the Northern Sierra Nevada, Southern Cascades, and eastern Sacramento Valley foothills. Wind gusts up to 40 mph possible.
In Northern California, winds will diminish today as the upper-level ridge moves inland with warm and dry conditions. An upper-level trough on Wednesday will bring an increase in northwest winds to northern areas and southwest winds from the crest eastward with afternoon gusts 25 – 35 mph. In the southern region of the state, a strong high pressure will become centered over the desert southwest today and Wednesday, causing substantial warming with temperatures around 10 degrees above normal through Wednesday
California historically experiences some of the most devastating wildfires in the months of September and October. Do not let your guard down! To learn more ways on how to prevent sparking a wildfire, visit www.ReadyForWildfire.org
