September 26, 2021 - More than 10,200 firefighters remain on the frontlines of 11 major wildfires and one extended attack wildfire in California. Yesterday, firefighters also responded to 11 initial attack wildfires across the state. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 7,686 wildfires that have burned more than 2.4 million acres in California. In comparison, during the same time last year, there were 8,420 fires, which burned more than 3.7 million acres.
A Red Flag Warning issued for this afternoon and evening due to strong gusty wind and low humidity for most of Modoc County. A Fire Weather Watch issued for Monday afternoon and night due to potential gusty winds and low humidity for portions of northeast California and the Eastern Sierra. In Northern California, as an upper-level trough approaches, temperatures will begin a rapid cooling trend through early next week. Onshore flow will deepen today and Monday. Relative humidity in western areas will increase in response with gustier winds developing through coastal gaps. In the southern part of the state, a Pacific trough will slowly drop down the west coast today through Wednesday. Temperatures will cool a few degrees both today and Monday and then there will be significant cooling Tuesday through Wednesday. Westerly winds will surface across the wind prone mountain and desert areas Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening.
As Fall season begins, it is important to remember that some of the largest and most destructive wildfires occur during this time of year. Be prepared and do not let your guard down. To learn ways to prevent sparking a wildfire, visit www.ReadyForWildfire.org
