February 1, 2022 - SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today issued a proclamation declaring February 1, 2022, as Lunar New Year and joined communities around the state welcoming the Year of the Tiger.

The text of the proclamation can be found here and a copy is below.

PROCLAMATION

As we join families across the state and around the globe in welcoming the Lunar New Year, we are reminded of the many diverse communities that call California home – our state’s greatest asset.

This occasion is an opportunity to lift up the heritage and history of the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) who celebrate the Lunar New Year. Whether they’ve called California home for many generations or are newly arrived, AAPI communities have contributed to the Golden State as students, educators, workers, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, community builders and activists.

We must also recognize the discriminatory acts, xenophobic policies and mistreatment suffered by AAPIs throughout our history. Amid the shameful increase in Anti-Asian hate across the country, we must continue to call out past and present racism and fight for the safety and inclusion of these communities.

On the Lunar New Year, let us join our friends and neighbors in celebration and take the opportunity to learn about the rich traditions of this special holiday and the past and present contributions of the AAPI community to our state. We wish you and your loved ones happiness, prosperity, fortune and good health in the Year of the Tiger.

NOW THEREFORE I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim February 1, 2022, as “Lunar New Year.”
