GOOD FOOD AND GREAT RAFFLE PRIZES AT JULY BREAKFAST

The NMCHC Community Breakfast on Sunday, July 12th will have some special Raffle prizes including gift certificates valued at $25 to $40 for several restaurants (Woods Creek, Black Oak & Black Bear) and a family pass to California Caverns.  Raffle tickets remain just 3 for one dollar.  Breakfast is served by our great group of volunteers from 8 a.m. ‘till 11 a.m. and includes eggs cooked to order, fresh fruit, all-you-can-eat pancakes and a choice of ham or sausage…all for just $5.  A family package (2 adults/2 children costs just $15.  Whether this is the first time you’ve visited Coulterville or you’re a “regular”, be sure and come on by…it’s one of the wonderful community events that make Coulterville so special!

This monthly breakfast was one of the very first fund raising activities developed to raise funds to establish a local gold rush era museum…now known as the Northern Mariposa County History Center.  It continues to be an important fund raiser, helping to keep the doors of this private, unique, nonprofit museum open 5 days a week, Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., for 11 months of the year, February through December.  Thank you to the many generous donors who contribute such great items to be raffled off!

DOCENT TRAINING and LUNCHEON

There will be a Docent training and summer celebration for all docents on Tuesday, August 18th.  This is for both current volunteers and those just coming aboard.  If you are interested to learn more about becoming a docent, just a 3-hour monthly commitment, call the museum at: 209-878-3015.

MOVIN' MOVIN' MOVIN' KEEP THOSE CATTLE MOVIN'
Erickson PresentationThe final presentation of this year’s NMCHC Lecture Series took place on Saturday, June 13 up in Greeley Hill.  Tim Erickson shared his memories about the ranches and pastures whose history continues to dim as time flows on.  His own family’s story, of great grandparents arriving in the 1850’s; their persistence in remaining on the land and in the cattle business when others moved to more urban areas to seek employment so that they were able to pick up ranches and grazing lands that were almost valueless at the time; waking up to find an unknown heard of cattle in your meadow and thinking nothing of it, his earliest memories of some of the local ‘characters’…from stage coach drivers to some with more “colorful” pasts; loosing water rights as the park system matured and took over much of the highlands and similar memories, as well as the great video featuring many of the down ‘n dirty photographs taken by Rebecca Harvey …offered a far more intimate glimpse of local history and the cattle business of today and tomorrow than what is contained in the history books and newspapers.

The board of directors wants to thank this year’s speakers and is excited about next year’s series that is falling into place far earlier.  Look for an announcement in January about the exciting line-up of speakers for the March through June presentations.

Audience was captivated by video presentation that preceded Tim Erickson's musings (see photo).
