March 18, 2022 - SEQUOIA AND KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARKS, Calif. –The portion of the Generals Highway between Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is opening on Friday, March 18 for the season. This reopening will allow visitors to travel between the Grant Grove area of Kings Canyon and the Giant Forest area of Sequoia, making it much easier to visit both parks in a single visit. This portion of the highway was largely affected by the 2021 KNP Complex Fire, and this is the first time it opens to the public since the fire.

Along the newly opened highway, some road and trail closures may still be in effect due to impacts from the KNP Complex Fire. Some national forest roads may still be closed for winter.

Winter weather is expected on Saturday and tire chains or cables could be required to enter the parks.

The Generals Highway is subject to closure at any time in the event of inclement weather, rock or debris fall, or other hazardous conditions. These risks are heightened by fire impacts along the roadway. For the most current road conditions, including information about tire chain controls, call the parks’ information line at (559) 565 -3341, press 1, and then press 1 again. Details of what is open and closed can be found online at go.nps.gov/SEKIconditions.
