Lake McSwain Spring Trout Derby is planned for April 2nd and 3rd

April 8, 2022 - Participants in the Spring Trout Derby at Lake McSwain caught plenty of trout – and had plenty of fun this past weekend. A total of 208 fish were entered in the derby by more than 300 registered anglers.

The tournament was managed through the smart phone app FishDonkey and ranked as the 21st largest tournament to be held on the app.

“It was an absolute blast,” said MID Parks and Recreation Director Brooke Gutierrez. “Everyone had a great time and they caught a lot of fish. You couldn’t have asked for better weather.”

The Derby was held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday May 15. In total, 304 participants used the popular smart phone app FishDonkey to compete in the tournament this year.

The winners were:

Largest Trout: $2,000
Debra Jones – 29.75 inches

Stringer of 3 Longest Trout: $2,000
Jayden Victory – 27.25 inches; 26.50 inches; 26.50 inches for a total of 80.25 inches.

Wild Card: $2,000
James Roque – 22.75 inches

Wild Card Kid’s Trout: Fishing Pole and Tackle Box (Sponsored by Splash N Dash/Reel Deal Café and Market)
Tino – 22 inches

“Everyone had a great time throughout the weekend. The weather couldn’t have been better,” said MID’s Gutierrez. “We are already planning for the next trout derby in fall. We are going to continue to make this the best tournament we possibly can.”
