May 6, 2022 - MARIPOSA — Caltrans is partnering with Mariposa County to hold a free Clean California Dump Day event at the Mariposa Solid Waste and Recycling Center on Saturday, May 14, 2022. Caltrans welcomes you to bring non-hazardous, unwanted items for free disposal.

This free Dump Day event is made possible through Governor Gavin Newsom’s Clean California initiative, a sweeping $1.1 billion, multiyear clean-up effort led by Caltrans to keep roads and waterways free of litter, create thousands of jobs, and transform state and local public spaces through beautification efforts.

Caltrans will have staff on-site to accept household waste and approved debris free of charge. The Dump Day event will take place at the Mariposa County Solid Waste and Recycling Center, 5593 Hwy 49N, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until capacity is reached.

Free Dump Day event collection is limited to household items.

See the list below for specifics on what will and will not be accepted at this event.

Dump Day collection items to be accepted:
• Appliances (Limit 2) • Bulky Items – old furniture, chairs, tables, etc. (Limit 4)
• Mattresses (Limit 4)
• Car and pickup tires (Limit 4, with or without rims are acceptable, no large truck tires).
• Household trash (make sure loose items are properly bagged) up to two cubic yards of trash (approx. the equivalent of a small trailer or pickup load).

Items NOT accepted at this event:
• Hazardous waste (such as paints, oils, treated lumber and other chemicals)
• E-waste (computers, televisions, monitors, video games, microwave ovens, etc.)
• Green waste (leaves, prunings, grass, brush vegetation, etc.)
• Concrete and demolition materials

Caltrans reminds motorists to properly secure and tarp all cargo loads prior to driving. Transporting unsecured loads is unsafe, illegal, and pollutes California's roads and waterways. Loads that are not tied down/secured by tarps/nets or enclosed will not be accepted.

Tips for securing your load:
• Completely cover loads with tarps or cargo nets. Debris can escape from gaps.
• Remove loose material and trash before driving.
• Don't overload; keep materials level with your truck bed.
• Put light items lower, tie large items to the vehicle for traffic safety.

Caltrans has hosted 106 free Dump Day events since July and collected more than 30,000 cubic yards (more than 500 tons) of trash. Items collected include nearly 12,000 tires, nearly 3,000 mattresses, more than 800 appliances, and one hot tub.

Since launching Clean California in July, Caltrans has removed nearly 572,000 cubic yards of litter from state highways – the equivalent of 9,600 tons or enough to fill 175 Olympic-size swimming pools – and hired 686 new team members as part of Clean California, including 531 maintenance workers who collect litter and remove graffiti.
