July 2015 - Tackling the Leaks by Peter Kampa, General Manager Lake Don Pedro Community Services District

Water has been leaking into our streets. You may have noticed that it’s taking the District quite a while to patch up each new unwelcome river. We know it must be troubling to see so much water spilled onto the pavement, especially during this time of drought. Trust me - we’re just as concerned as you are!

Unfortunately, with a water system that was improperly constructed by the developer in the 1960’s, we have more system leaks than we can handle with our small staff! Recently, we have hired a company specialized in water system repair and construction. In May and June of this year, we spent close to $40,000 on the contractor to fix leaks nearly full time. Rather than asking the contractor to simply fix the leaks, we are having the faulty water lines replaced. This way, the new pipe should last 50 to 70 years more.

In order to address these leaks faster and more cost effectively, we are applying for over 2.8 million dollars in grants to contract for the massive replacement of nearly all of these faulty pipelines. If the grant is successful, just after the first of next year, you will see construction crews working on streets all over the community, with the goal of replacing all leaky pipes by late Spring. If we are still on the wells next year, and there is no water in McClure, we should still have a reliable water supply for our community!

We are working hard on your behalf!

We have also recently launched a new community resource on social media. The Lake Don Pedro Community Services District now has a Facebook Page. This platform can be used to report leaks, receive quick and reliable answers to any questions you may have, start a community dialogue, or stay up to date on the current construction and projects. You can access the community by typing the following URL into your browser: www.facebook.com/ldpcsd. Or, simply type ‘Lake Don Pedro Community Services District’ into the Facebook search bar, and press enter! We look forward to hearing your voice.
