June 7, 2022 - Wildland firefighters continue to work toward containment goals on eight uncontained large fires that have burned 724,414 acres. New Mexico has five large fires and Alaska, Arizona and Colorado each have one. One national incident management organization (NIMO) team and three Type 1 incident management teams (IMT) are assigned to the Hermits Peak Fire on the Santa Fe National Forest. A Type 2 IMT is assigned to the Black Fire on the Gila National Forest.
As more than 4,300 wildland firefighters and support personnel work to contain large fires, Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) teams are starting their work to help restore the health of the land. A BAER team includes specialists in soils, hydrology, geology, engineering, wildlife, botany, and archeology. Each resource specialist brings a unique perspective to the BAER process, to help the team rapidly determine whether the post-fire effects constitute urgent threats to human life, safety, property, or critical natural and cultural resources. BAER teams are currently assigned to the Nogal Canyon, Cerro Pelado, and Hermits Peak / Calf Canyon fires in New Mexico.
Breezy and dry conditions will develop across the southern Great Basin, West Slope, and Southwest west of the Divide. Temperatures will be warmer and relative humidity lower than yesterday, with areas of elevated conditions possible, most likely across southern Utah, northern Arizona, and the West Slope. A backdoor cold front will move south across the High Plains during the day, then west to the Divide across Colorado and New Mexico tonight. Scattered wet thunderstorms, some severe, are likely along the front across the High Plains during the afternoon and evening with the front, with increased low-level moisture and higher relative humidity recovery across Colorado and New Mexico east of the Divide. Hot temperatures with south winds near 15 mph will continue across portions of central and west Texas ahead of the front as well, with locally elevated conditions. Hot and dry conditions will prevail across much of Alaska, except for isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms from the Panhandle into south-central Alaska. A cold front will move into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, with showers and thunderstorms and widespread wetting rain.
