June 8, 2022 - Currently, 16 large fires have burned 762,545 acres in four states. Nine new large fires were reported in Alaska. Nearly 4,200 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to firefighters credit nifcincidents.

Today, the number of acres burned in 2022 surpassed two million acres. Across the United States, 28,764 wildfires have burned 2,011,197 acres. This is the second most year-to-date acres burned in the past 10 years.

Wildland firefighters need your help as we head into the summer months. You don’t have to be a firefighter to keep your home safe from wildfire. Homeowners and communities play a large role in fire safety. Take simple measures such as keeping streets and roads clear to fire engines can safely maneuver and residents can evacuate if needed. Make sure fire hydrants are visible and accessible. More importantly, clear flammable vegetation around structures, on large lots and along roadsides. These simple prevention measures can go along way toward reducing damages of fire to your home and community.

The Predictive Services staff released the significant wildland fire potential outlook for June, July, August and September. The monthly seasonal outlook podcast is also available.

Weather

Locally elevated conditions are expected across portions of the southern Great Basin into central Arizona due to southwest winds of 10-20 mph amid relative humidity of 5-15%. To the east, limited moisture near the Continental Divide in New Mexico and southern Colorado will result in isolated mainly dry afternoon thunderstorms with the potential for several new fires. From the Front Range to the into the southern High Plains, thunderstorms are expected to be more numerous and wetter, with severe outflow winds and large hail possible. Hot, dry, and breezy conditions will develop across portions of central and southwest Texas as well. Showers and thunderstorms are forecast across the Appalachians to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast with wetting rain, while scattered wet thunderstorms are likely across the southern Florida Peninsula. Very warm, dry, and breezy conditions will continue in southwest Alaska and the western Interior, with improving conditions likely for much of south-central Alaska.
