June 9, 2022 - Three new large fires were reported yesterday, two in Alaska and one in Texas. Nationally, 17 large fires have burned 761,625 acres in four states. The Alaska area increased their firefighters credit nifcpreparedness level (PL) to PL 3 due to an increase in wildfire activity. 

In 2022, 27,765 wildfires were caused by people and burned 1,899,886 acres. As of today, more than 4,600 human-caused wildfires were reported in Texas. The states with the most acres burned from human-caused wildfires are: Arizona, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. In contrast, lightning has ignited 1,153 wildfires that have burned 141,714 acres.

The major causes of wildfires ignited by people are from loss of control of debris burning; unattended and improperly extinguished or not extinguished campfires; and sparks or heat transfer from the use of vehicles and equipment like chain saws or recreational vehicles including trailers. Weather

Isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms will develop across much of the higher terrain in New Mexico and eastern Arizona today. Drier thunderstorms are also likely to develop into southern Colorado. Very hot and dry conditions will spread across much of the Desert Southwest into southern California and the Central Valley. Low relative humidity with gusty winds is expected across portions of the Interior into southwest Alaska. Isolated mostly wet thunderstorms remain likely in portions of southwest and south-central Alaska, possibly spreading into the southern Interior. Severe thunderstorms are likely across the central and southern Plains and along the central Gulf and southeast Atlantic Coasts.
