June 10, 2022 - Nationally, 24 large fires have burned 776,748 acres in five states. Nine new large fires were reported, eight in Alaska and one in Utah. More than 4,100 wildland firefighters and support firefighters credit nifcpersonnel are assigned to incidents. One national incident management organization team, two Type 1 incident management teams (IMT) and two Type 2 IMTs are managing incidents in the Southwest and Alaska areas.

Fire managers are preparing for potential lightning ignitions in parts of the Southwest area that will be followed by hot, dry and windy conditions. Large fires in Alaska will continue to burn actively for the next couple days. A favorable change in the weather this weekend could moderate conditions in parts of Alaska. The national fuels and fire danger briefing produced by the Predictive Services staff at NIFC is available online. The significant wildland fire potential outlook for June, July, August and September and the monthly seasonal outlook podcast are also available.

So far in 2022, 29,050 wildfires have burned 2,083,238 acres. More than 95% of these wildfires were caused by people. Our forests and rangelands are a natural treasure so please do your part in protecting the open spaces we all value. Remember and teach campfire safety to your children. Make sure your campfires are dead out by using dirt and water when stirring the coals. Use a shovel to help properly extinguish your campfire and keep it nearby, just in case. Be careful with matches and lighters and carefully extinguish all smoking materials. Together we can prevent unwanted wildfires.

Weather

Isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are likely from eastern into central Arizona and southern into central New Mexico, especially over the higher terrain. Isolated dry thunderstorms may spread into northern Arizona and southern Colorado as well. Given the very hot temperatures and dry fuels within the forecast area of thunderstorms, new ignitions are expected, and there is forecast High- Risk significant fire potential. Hot and dry conditions will spread across inland southern and central California, much of the Great Basin, and West Slope, with temperatures ranging from 90-115°F and relative humidity of 5- 15%. Warm, dry, and breezy conditions will continue across portions of southwest Alaska and the Interior. Showers will continue across western Washington and northwest Oregon into the Idaho Panhandle and northwest Montana. Severe thunderstorms are likely from the ArkLaTex through the Lower Mississippi Valley to the western Florida Panhandle. Pockets of lower relative humidity are likely in the Southeast and New England amid the post-frontal environment.
