June 15, 2022 - Five new large fires were reported yesterday, two in California and one in Alabama, Arizona and Kansas. Currently 38 large fires have burned 1,217,213 acres in four states. More than 6,700 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country.
Wildfires in the Southwest area continue to burn actively. Residents near large fires in Arizona and New Mexico remain evacuated as wildland firefighters work to contain them. Wildland fire managers continue to monitor critical weather and fuels conditions in several areas of the country.
A fuels and fire behavior advisory has been issued for Alaska's southwest and central Interior regions. Prolonged hot, dry and windy conditions resulted in very dry fuels and increased potential fire extreme fire behavior. The weekly fuels and fire danger briefing and current advisories are available on the National Interagency Coordination Center Predictive Services website.
Upper-level ridging will be over much of the southern tier of CONUS, with upper highs forecast over New Mexico and the southern and central Appalachians. Hot and dry conditions are expected across the Southwest and into the southern Great Basin and southern and central California. Dry and breezy conditions will likely continue across portions of the southern and central High Plans and Colorado Rockies. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected from the Alaska Range through the central and eastern portions of the Interior. Above normal temperatures and relative humidity of 15-30% are expected in the Interior as well. Strong to severe thunderstorms are forecast along and ahead of a cold front from Kansas through the western Great Lakes and Upper Midwest. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are also likely across much of the Southeast and Appalachians. http://www.predictiveservices.nifc.gov/outlooks/outlooks.htm
