.DISCUSSION...
Currently, a trough of low pressure remains over the Great Basin
with cool northwest flow over the central California interior.
This allowed for another day of below average temperatures
throughout the district. Madera tied a record low temperature of
48 degrees, which last occurred back in 1929. This trough will
continue to slowly track east today, allowing for minor synoptic
warming and temperatures returning to near normal reading for
this time of June.
Looking at the evolution of the synoptic pattern this week, model
ensembles are in agreement that an area of low pressure will form
off the central CA coast on Tuesday. This cutoff low will remain
positioned off the central CA coast through at least Thursday.
This will pull subtropical moisture northward into the region
during this time frame. There is a 20% to 30% chance of
thunderstorms in the Sierra on Wednesday through Friday. There is
even a 15% chance that some of these storms could find there way
into the upper Mojave desert as well as southern end of the San
Joaquin Valley on Wednesday and Thursday. The main risk from these
thunderstorms will be gusty winds as well as lightning.
There is a 50% to 60% chance of triple digit reading from Tuesday
onward through Thursday across the entire valley and desert
areas. But, this will also depend on the amount of cloud cover
over the region. High pressure will then build into the region by
the end of the week. Triple digit readings are likely (>70%) by
Friday through the end of the week across the valley and desert.
