June 23, 2022 - Seven new large fires were reported, two in both Alaska and Florida, one each in California, New Jersey and Texas. Nationally, 50 large fires and complexes have burned 1,693,426 acres in firefighters credit nifc10 states. Wildfire activity continues in Alaska where 30 large fires are burning. Wildland firefighters are also working on incidents in the Southwest, Great Basin, Rocky Mountain, Southern, Southern California, and Eastern areas.

Since January 1, 31,979 wildfires have burned 3,342,074 acres in the United States. Nearly nine out of ten wildfires across the country are human-caused and can be prevented. Everyone can do their part to help prevent wildfires. Homeowners and communities play a large role in fire safety. Take simple measures such as keeping streets and roads clear to fire engines can safely maneuver and residents can evacuate if needed. Make sure fire hydrants are visible and accessible. More importantly, clear flammable vegetation around structures, on large lots and along roadsides. These simple prevention measures can go along way toward reducing damages of fire to your home and community.

Weather

An upper low will move into the Great Basin today with isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms across portions of the eastern Sierra, central and southern Nevada, and southwest Utah. The greatest threat for new significant fires will be over central and southeastern Nevada into southwest Utah. Thunderstorms will be wet across much of Arizona into New Mexico, southeast Utah, and southern Colorado, with heavy rain and flooding possible. Hot and dry conditions with near record setting temperatures are likely across portions of Alabama and Georgia, but winds will be light. Hot temperatures are likely across the lower elevations of California as well. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across the northern Rockies this afternoon, with more numerous thunderstorms, a few severe, across the northern and central Plains. Above normal temperatures with isolated afternoon thunderstorms will continue across south-central Alaska today, with a few thunderstorms into the eastern Interior as well. Locally breezy and dry conditions are expected across the central and northern Interior this afternoon with rapid spread possible on existing fires.
