June 28, 2022 - On June 26, 2022, a helicopter on contract with the Alaska Department of Forestry crashed while assigned to the Clear fire. The pilot was fatally injured. The firefighting community extends its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Forty-three large fires and complexes have burned 1,789,551 acres in eight states. New large fires were reported in Arizona, Mississippi, and New Jersey. More than 4,200 wildland firefighters and support personnel including six Type 2 incident management teams are assigned to incidents across the country.
To date, 32,954 wildfires have burned 3,608,939 acres, both numbers are well above the 10-year average. More than 31,200 human-caused wildfires have burned 2.1 million acres in 2022. Lightning has ignited more than 1,600 wildfires that consumed 1.5 million acres. The states with the most human-caused wildfires included: Texas, North Carolina, California, Georgia, and Florida.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are likely across much of the Southwest and through the Four Corners region, mostly over the higher terrain. Drier thunderstorms are likely from northwest Arizona into northeast Utah. Strong to severe thunderstorms are forecast across Montana ahead of a cold front, with cooler temperatures behind the front in the Pacific Northwest. Dry and breezy conditions are likely across portions of the inland Pacific Northwest and western and northern Great Basin associated with the cold front. Another cold front will stall and weaken along the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts, with showers and thunderstorms forecast along the Rio Grande in Texas, Gulf Coast, and southeast Atlantic Coast. Cooler and drier post-frontal conditions are likely behind the front from the Northeast to the southern Plains. Showers and thunderstorms are expected across the western and northern Great Lakes.
