June 30, 2022 - SACRAMENTO – Today, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a statement from State Epidemiologist, Dr. Erica Pan following the Federal Food and Drug CDPH logoAdministration's Vaccines (FDA) authorization to expand eligibility of the COVID-19 Moderna vaccine for children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 and the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup's conclusion that the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for this age group.

"Vaccination for youth is an important tool to protect their long-term health against COVID-19. After a thorough review of the scientific evidence demonstrating safety and efficacy, the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup support the use of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine as a two-dose vaccine series for those aged 6 through 17 years. Just last week, infant and toddler COVID-19 vaccines were granted emergency use authorization, and we're happy to include another option for families to protect themselves from the worst outcomes of COVID-19 and help them safely get back to the activities they need and love."

This is supported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the FDA's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee. Completion of the primary series remains the best way to prevent hospitalization and death from COVID-19, including for our youngest children.

We encourage parents and caregivers to contact their pediatrician or healthcare provider to learn more about the safe and effective vaccines available for all Californians aged 6 months and older, or visit MyTurn.ca.gov to find a vaccine for the whole family.
