The Oakhurst Library is pleased to host a presentation by Jack and Kay Good along with local author, Marcia Freedman, on Saturday, July 25th from 10:30 a.m. to Noon.

Jack and Kay Good will be talking about the Coarsegold Historical Society and Historic Museum. Coarsegold is located at the southern end of the Gold Chain where the town boasted productive gold mines from the 1850’s through the early 1900’s.  The Society’s volunteers have worked tirelessly to improve the Museum which is located on Highway 41.

They will talk about the wonderful two-volume book As We Were Told which was published by the Society.  It is a 409-page book of interviews with mountain pioneers who have lived in the area  The second volume also includes the history of the Coarsegold Rodeo, the John Shay story Twenty Years in the Backwoods of California, and other stories.

The Historic Museum stocks many other books of local history such as Following the Bells by Dwight Barnes, Walking Where We Lived by Gaylen Lee, Miners, Lumberjacks and Cowboys by Dwight Barnes

Local author, Marcia Penner Freedman will be talking about two of her books that cover

a historical perspective of our foothills.  Willow Creek History: Tales of Cow Camps, Shake Makers & Basket Weavers follows this 25-mile long creek that flows from the Sierra Forest to the San Joaquin River.  Marcia describes the Creek’s place in logging, hydroelectric and herding history as well as the native tribes that made their homes along its banks.

Marcia’s second book Fighting Fire in the Sierra National Forest traces the history of fire management from the forest’s early years through the policy shifts that began in the 1960’s as well as the measures used today.  This topic is especially vital to our area this summer, slated to be one of the driest summers in history.

All of these books will be available for perusal and purchase at this event.
