Washburn Fire in Yosemite National Park Updates for Friday, July 15, 2022
July 15, 2022 - Nationally, 93 large fires and complexes have burned 3,072,433 acres in 11 states. Fifteen new large fires were reported yesterday, eight in Alaska and one each in Arizona, California,
Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. More than 6,200 wildland firefighter and support personnel are assigned to incidents.
Wildland fire managers are preparing for dry lightning in Nevada where initial attack activity is likely to increase. Several geographic areas in the West will have above normal fire danger as very hot and dry conditions continue. The Predictive Services fuels and fire danger summary includes more information on the current and expected conditions.
Since January 1, 36,578 wildfires have burned 5,179,043 acres. This continues to be well above the 10-year averages of 29,931 wildfires that burned 2,766,520 acres. As hot and dry conditions continue through July and August, wildland firefighters need homeowners to play a large role in fire safety. Take simple measures such as keeping streets and roads clear to fire engines can safely maneuver and residents can evacuate if needed. Make sure fire hydrants are visible and accessible. More importantly, clear flammable vegetation around structures, on large lots and along roadsides. These simple prevention measures can go along way toward reducing damages of fire to your home and community.
Isolated dry thunderstorms are likely to be ongoing across eastern Washington, central and northern Idaho, and western Montana this morning. The thunderstorms are likely to become wetter as they move into Montana during the day with severe storms possible. Monsoonal thunderstorms are likely to continue over the greater Four Corners region, with wetter thunderstorms moving into western Utah and eastern portions of Nevada. The greatest threat for dry thunderstorms will be on the periphery of this moisture from the southern Sierra Front into northeast Nevada and south-central Idaho. Dry and breezy conditions are likely across portions of northwest Nevada, southeast Oregon, and southwest Idaho in the afternoon. Hot temperatures will continue across the central Plains with elevated conditions most likely across Kansas. Afternoon wet thunderstorms are likely to continue near the Gulf Coast into Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic. Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are forecast across portions of the northern Plains into the Midwest ahead of a cold front. One more day of low afternoon humidity is likely across the eastern Interior, with cooler and wetter conditions likely for the rest of Alaska. Widespread wetting rain is forecast to move into southwest Alaska and the western Interior during the day.
