July 18, 2022 - Nearly 90 large fires and complexes have burned  3,100,941 acres in 12 states. Six new large fires were reported, two in Alaska and one in Alabama, Idaho, Montana and Oklahoma. More than firefighters credit nifc6,600 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country.

Critical weather conditions are expected in parts of the Great Basin, northern Rocky Mountains, and high plains of Nebraska and South Dakota today. Stay informed on current and expected weather and fire danger with the Predictive Services fuels and fire danger summaryfire weather and potential briefing, and the seven-day significant fire potential outlook.

As we continue to build homes and live near public forests and rangelands where wildfires are a natural event, our homes can become just another log on the fire. Worse still, sparks form chimneys, barbeques and debris burning can start the fires that consume these lands and homes we love so much. As we live and play near the wildlands, we need to work within our communities to learn how to protect what we value from the flames. Become Firewise and protect your property and our precious natural resources.

Weather

Elevated to critical west to southwest winds will develop across the northern Great Basin amid relative humidity of 7-15%. Very strong west winds of 30-40 mph with gusts 50-70 mph will develop across much of Montana as well. Scattered mainly dry thunderstorms are expected to develop tonight across eastern Washington, the Idaho Panhandle, and western Montana ahead of an upper trough. Scattered monsoonal thunderstorms will continue across eastern Arizona, New Mexico, and the Colorado Rockies while scattered wet thunderstorms develop ahead of a cold front from the Mid-Mississippi Valley through the Appalachians into the Northeast. Below normal temperatures will continue across Alaska with rain likely for most areas south of the Brooks Range, with the heaviest rain across south-central Alaska.
