July 30, 2022 - The National Weather Service Hanford Office reports a significant amount of monsoonal moisture will move westward into Central California Sunday, leading to the possibility of strong thunderstorms in the green, shaded area.

Heavy rainfall in the Sierra Nevada and Kern County mountains could result in flash flooding.

In addition, any thunderstorm can produce dangerous cloud to ground lightning strikes.

.SYNOPSIS...
Triple digit heat is expected in most of the San Joaquin Valley
this afternoon. A significant amount of monsoonal moisture will
move westward into Central California Sunday, resulting in the
possibility of strong thunderstorms in the eastern and southern
part of our service area. Intense rainfall may lead to localized
flooding in the Sierra Nevada and Kern County mountains Sunday.

.DISCUSSION...
The forecast area will be sandwiched between an area of high
pressure over Northern Nevada and a cyclone aloft just off the
coast of the Pacific Northwest this weekend. Triple digit heat is
anticipated in the majority of the San Joaquin Valley this
afternoon. A few strong thunderstorms are possible this afternoon
into tonight in the Sierra Nevada, adjacent foothills, and Kern
County mountains and desert. Be that as it may, the major forecast
concern is a large amount of monsoonal moisture poised to move 
into Central California Sunday. Strong thunderstorms are possible
Sunday in most of Kern County. Farther northward in the San
Joaquin Valley, strong thunderstorms are possible as far west as 
Visalia Sunday. Intense rainfall rates in the Sierra Nevada and
Kern County mountains could result in localized flooding Sunday. A
Flood Watch may be required for the Sierra Nevada and Kern County
mountains Sunday. 

It could be another active weather day in terms of strong
thunderstorms Monday, before the aforementioned area of high 
pressure moves southeastward into the Desert Southwest. A few
thunderstorms are possible in the Sierra Nevada each afternoon and
evening Tuesday through Friday. A downward temperature trend is
expected Monday and Tuesday. By Tuesday afternoon, high
temperatures will be near normal for this time of year. An upward
temperature trend is expected Wednesday and Thursday. Triple digit
heat is likely in most of the San Joaquin Valley Friday afternoon.

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions will prevail in the San Joaquin Valley for the next
24 hours. IFR or lower conditions are expected in and near 
thunderstorms in the Sierra Nevada, adjacent foothills, and Kern 
County mountains and desert this afternoon into tonight.

.AIR QUALITY ISSUES...
On Saturday, July 30th, 2022, unhealthy for sensitive groups in 
Kern and Tulare Counties, as well as in Sequoia National Park and
Forest.
