August 20, 2022 - The majority of wildland fire activity continues throughout the West. To date, the 2022 fire year has had over 43,000 fires with nearly 6 million acres burned. These numbers remain above the 10-year-average of 38,000 acres and 4.7 million acres burned.
On August 18, a firefighter on contract with the Oregon Department of Forestry was fatally injured while assigned to the Rum Creek fire in Oregon. The firefighting community extends its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
As you venture outdoors for end of summer adventures, remember to prevent wildfires by safely using outdoor equipment and vehicles, and be aware of fire restrictions in place that may affect activities like campfires and barbecues. We're all in this together so let's do our best to keep our environment safe and prevent human-caused wildfires.
The Predictive Services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the significant wildland fire potential outlook for August, September, October and November. Isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are likely to develop across northern Washington, much of Idaho, and western Montana. Temperatures 5-15 degrees above normal are likely to continue across the northwestern US, with temperatures above 100oF also expected in the California Central Valley. Afternoon relative humidity will drop to 10-25% but may drop into the single digits across portions of northern California. Widespread monsoonal thunderstorms will continue across the Southwest, with scattered wet thunderstorms from the central Great Basin into Colorado. Scattered to numerous thunderstorms will develop across the southern Plains and much of Texas into the Mid-Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes along and ahead of a cold front.
