August 22, 2022 - Nationally, 48 large fires and complexes have burned 774,562 acres in 11 states. Two new large fires were reported, one if Florida and one in Wyoming. Wildland firefighters contained five large fires yesterday. More than 8,600 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country.
Red flag warning and fire weather watches are in effect today for parts of northeast Oregon, southeast Washington and central Idaho for lightning storms over dry fuels. Above normal temperatures will continue across the northwestern states for the next few days.
The Predictive Services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the significant wildland fire potential outlook for August, September, October and November. Isolated to scattered mainly dry thunderstorms are likely to be ongoing across northeast Oregon into southeast Washington and western Idaho. Isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms will develop in the afternoon across central Idaho into southwest Montana with isolated thunderstorms into north-central Washington. Breezy west to southwest winds of 12-20 mph with gusts 30-35 mph are expected across eastern Oregon, northeast California, and the northern Great Basin amid relative humidity of 8-20% creating elevated fire weather. Isolated to scattered monsoon thunderstorms will develop across eastern Arizona, New Mexico, and the Colorado Rockies. Widespread showers with scattered thunderstorms and locally heavy rain will develop across much of Texas into the Lower Mississippi Valley along a stalled cold front. Scattered to numerous thunderstorms will develop across the Northeast with scattered wet thunderstorms extending southward along the East Coast into Florida.
