August 24, 2022 - Currently, 41 large fires and complexes have burned 418,377 in 10 states. One new large fire was reported in Montana. More than 8,400 wildland firefighters are assigned to incidents. Two national incident management organization teams, two Type 1 incident management teams (IMTs) and six Type 2 IMTs are assigned to large fires in the Northwest, California and Great Basin areas.
This year, people have caused 38,565 wildfires that have burned 2.6 million acres. Lightning ignited 5,175 wildfires and 3.4 million acres were burned. Wildland firefighters need your help to prevent wildfires. While you enjoy your public lands, please check for local fire restrictions and abide by them.
The significant wildland fire potential forecasts represent the cumulative forecasts of the ten Geographic Area Predictive Services units and the National Predictive Services unit. The National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook is updated monthly and posted on the National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) predictive services page.
Isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are possible over portions of central Idaho into southwest Montana. Isolated to scattered mainly wet thunderstorms are likely from north-central Washington into the northern Idaho Panhandle and northwest Montana, with scattered wet thunderstorms across the eastern slopes of the Rockies in Montana through central and eastern Montana into the Dakotas. Above normal temperatures will continue across the Columbia Basin to northern California and the northern Great Basin with relative humidity of 6-20%, but winds will be lighter at around 10 mph. Isolated to scattered monsoon thunderstorms are forecast across southeast California and the southern Great Basin into the Colorado Rockies and Southwest. Numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop across central and eastern Texas through the Southeast, with the heaviest rain likely across the Lower Mississippi Valley. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely across the western Great Lakes as well.
