August 27, 2022 - Three new large fires were reported, Idaho, Nevada and Washington each had one. Nationally, 42 large fires and complexes have burned 271,897 acres in 9 states. More than 9,600 wildland firefighters credit nifcfirefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country.

Since January 1, 47,548 wildfires have burned 6,105,335 acres. About 88% of these wildfires were caused by people. With hot and dry conditions prevalent in many states, wildland firefighters need you to do your part to prevent wildfires. Make sure to operate equipment and vehicles safely in the wildlands. Have spark arresters on equipment and vehicles like chain saws, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. Exhaust systems on any vehicle can easily ignite vegetation, so drive and park in designated areas keeping off and away from dry grass and brush. Recreating responsibly and taking these simple steps can prevent wildfires.

The significant wildland fire potential forecasts represent the cumulative forecasts of the ten Geographic Area Predictive Services units and the National Predictive Services unit. The National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook is updated monthly and posted on the National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) predictive services page.
