August 29, 2022 - Currently, 42 large fires and complexes have burned 300,226 acres in 9 states. No new large fires were reported yesterday. To date, 47,918 wildfires have burned 6,127,402 in the
United States. This continues to be well above the 10-year average of 40,298 wildfires and 5,210,323 acres burned.
Temperatures across the West will climb to between 80 and 100 degrees. Isolated dry thunderstorms are possible in the northern Sierra into northeast California and northwest Nevada today. Hot, dry and unstable conditions are expected across much of the west coast and parts of the Great Basin and Northern Rockies areas.
The significant wildland fire potential forecasts represent the cumulative forecasts of the ten Geographic Area Predictive Services units and the National Predictive Services unit. The National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook is updated monthly and posted on the National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) predictive services page.
Temperatures will begin to warm again across the West as upper-level ridging builds back over the region, with most areas in the upper 80s to low 100s. Low relative humidity will increase in coverage across the Inland Northwest, Sierra, Great Basin, Northern Rockies, West Slope, and northern California as well, but isolated dry thunderstorms are possible along the Sierra Front. Isolated thunderstorms are possible over the higher terrain in the Southwest and southern Colorado, but most moisture and thunderstorm chances will shift east across the southern Plains, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and Southeast. Strong to severe thunderstorms are likely from Michigan into the Mid-Mississippi Valley.
