September 11, 2022 - North Fork - Peace Officers with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit (MMU) and Fresno-Kings Unit (FKU) determined the Cal FirePower and Fork Fires were vehicle caused.

CAL FIRE FKU and MMU responded to the Power Fire near Powerhouse Road and Auberry Road in Fresno County on September 6. This fire burned 130 acres.

On September 7, CAL FIRE MMU responded to the Fork Fire in the North Fork area of Eastern Madera County. This fire burned 819 acres of vegetation, 28 structures and 15 outbuildings.

CAL FIRE encourages all residents to be aware and take precautions to prevent wildfires.

Here are a few tips to reduce the threat of causing a fire when operating vehicles:
• Prior to operating a vehicle, ensure all tires are properly inflated, brakes are in good working condition and the vehicle is well maintained
• If towing a trailer, make certain all tow chains are secure
• Check your vehicle gauges frequently
• Never drive or park a vehicle in tall, dead grass

Any person who accidently starts a wildfire can be held liable for fire suppression costs.
