September 12, 2022 - Currently, 93 large fires and complexes have burned 813,066 acres in several western states. More than 19,500 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country. One national incident management organization team, 10 Type 1 incident management teams (IMTs) and 14 Type 2 IMTs are assisting with large fires in the Northwest, Great Basin, Northern Rockies and California areas.
The September significant wildland fire potential outlook continues to reflect warmer and drier conditions leading to the high potential for severe wildfire activity throughout the western United States through the fall. Widespread high temperatures observed across areas in the West along with low relative humidity and periods of lightning activity continue to exacerbate the wildfire situation. The Predictive Services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center also provides information about current weather conditions and produces a weekly fuels and fire danger podcast.
When it comes to protecting homes and communities from wildfires, firefighters can not do it alone. As more of us live in the urban interface where homes and communities meet the wildlands, wildfire prevention and protection become everyone’s responsibility. Simple Firewise steps can help you and your neighbors minimize your risk from wildfire and maximize your safety. Reduce your risks and help our firefighters by becoming fire adaptive and Firewise.
Weak upper level troughing will move into the Northwest with upper ridging over the Front Range. Moisture will continue to move northward from the remnants of Kay with isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms across the Cascades into northeast California, southeast Oregon, and the northern Great Basin. A few new ignitions are possible, with showers likely to continue overnight as moisture continues to increase. Temperatures will remain above normal for much of the Intermountain West, with relative humidity of 5-25%, lowest over the Inland Northwest, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Breezy northwest winds of 15-20 mph with gusts 25-35 mph amid relative humidity of 15-25% will create areas of elevated conditions across eastern Montana into the western Dakotas. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast across southern California, the Sierra, central and southern Great Basin, and Southwest. Rain is forecast across much of the Great Lakes with showers and thunderstorms along the East Coast ahead of a cold front.
