California Statewide Fire Summary for Thursday, September 15, 2022

September 15, 2022 - As of this morning, there are 8,246 firefighters making progress on 10 major wildfires and three extended attack wildfires in California. Yesterday, Cal Firefirefighters also responded to 25 new initial attack wildfires across the state.

Since the beginning of the year, 351,161 acres have burned in California. While firefighters continue battling the current major wildfires, CAL FIRE and fire departments across the state remain prepared for potential more significant wildfires.

The Northern Region continues to experience a weak trough through Friday; the pattern sets the stage for the likelihood of rain for large portions of the region beginning Sunday. Anticipate the possibility for a quarter inch to three quarters of an inch of precipitation. Accordingly, temperatures will generally be near 8 degrees below normal thru tomorrow, then more substantial cooling starts from the northwest to the southeast during the weekend and lasts thru mid-next week with 5-15 degrees below normal readings. Areas of breeziness today through Friday with peak gusts 20-30 mph favoring the Greater Bay Area, Coastal Range, and northern/eastern areas. Saturday may bring peak gusts 25-35 mph, locally 40-50 mph along east of the Sierra Crest. Southern California temperatures may be as much as 10 degrees below normal with readings generally in the lower to mid-80s in the valleys, upper 60s and low 70s at the coast, and low to mid 90s in the deserts. Breezy conditions are possible the next few afternoons and evenings over the higher elevations of the Sierras, the Kern County Mountains, and the Mojave Desert, with gusts of 25 to 35 mph possible. An unseasonably deep trough will likely cause widespread, light precipitation to reach Central CA Sunday night into Monday. Expect a warmup in both regions by mid-week.

After a wildfire many dangers remain. Residents returning home should be aware of their surroundings. For your safety it is paramount to go through the returning home checklist. Other concerns after a wildfire are the increased rate of erosion and flooding during a rainfall event. Educate yourself and learn more at www.ReadyForWildfire.org.
