September 24, 2022 - One new large fire was reported in Oklahoma. Currently, 94 large fires and complexes have burned 904,624 acres. More than 9,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel are firefighters credit nifcassigned to incidents. Three Type 1 incident management teams, seven Type 2 IMTs and one complex IMT are supporting incidents in the Northwest, Northern California, Northern Rockies and Great Basin areas.

Maintaining defensible space is a year-round project. Residents can harden homes and minimize property damage this fall. Help reduce the risks to firefighting resources and communities by using NFPA’s Wildfire and Firewise USA Programs principles to create defensible space on private property.

Weather

Upper ridging will build over the West, with temperatures rising to above normal west of the Continental Divide. Relative humidity will fall to 5-15% across portions of California and the Great Basin but winds will be light. A cold front will move through the Great Lakes and Mid-Mississippi Valley into the Lower Mississippi Valley and southern Plains. Hot, dry, and breezy conditions are expected ahead of the front across the southern Plains as south-southwest winds 10-20 mph with gusts 20-30 mph develop amid relative humidity of 15-25%. Very dry conditions will continue over much of the Southeast as well, as relative humidity falls below 30%, with locally elevated conditions possible across portions of Virginia and North Carolina due to west winds of 10-15 mph. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely near the front from the Great Lakes through the Ohio Valley into the Lower Mississippi Valley, but amounts are expected to be light. Scattered wet thunderstorms are likely over south Florida, while isolated wet thunderstorms remain possible over far southern Arizona and New Mexico.
