September 25, 2022 - No new large fires were reported yesterday. Ninety-three large fires and complexes have burned 904,713 acres in seven states. More than 7,700 wildland firefighters and support firefighters credit nifcpersonnel are assigned to incidents across the country. 

Since January 1, 52,669 wildfires have burned 6,847,402 acres. This is the most wildfires reported in the United States in the past 10 years. As you recreate on public lands this fall, please do your part to prevent wildfires. 

Maintaining defensible space is a year-round project. Residents can harden homes and minimize property damage this fall. Help reduce the risks to firefighting resources and communities by using NFPA’s Wildfire and Firewise USA Programs principles to create defensible space on private property.

Weather

A cold front will move into Texas, the Appalachians, and Northeast this afternoon and evening. Northerly post-frontal winds of 12-20 mph with gusts 20-35 mph are expected across much of the Plains into the western Mississippi Valley as relative humidity falls to 12-25%, with locally critical conditions most likely across South Dakota and Oklahoma. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected along and ahead of the front from north Texas and through the Tennessee Valley into the Appalachians. More widespread showers with isolated thunderstorms are forecast in the Great Lakes and Northeast. Upper ridging will continue to bring above normal temperatures to the West with thermal troughing likely in central California into southwest Oregon. The lowest afternoon relative humidity of 7-20% is forecast across California, eastern Oregon, and the Great Basin, but winds are expected to remain light. Isolated thunderstorms will develop near the Mexican border from southeast California into far west Texas.
