Camping in the wilderness is common practice for outdoor enthusiasts that want to get away from crowds and their electronic devices. During Wilderness Month, take the time to unplug and enjoy the amazing places on your public lands! Wilderness camping has the same principles as normal camping, so please follow the Leave No Trace principles and remember to always #RecreateResponsibly.
Hurricane Ian will make landfall tonight as a major hurricane on the west coast of Florida likely between Fort Myers Beach and Clearwater. Tropical storm to hurricane force winds and heavy rainfall will spread across much of the Florida Peninsula, and the Weather Prediction Center has issued a High Risk (the highest level) for excessive rainfall through central and northern portions of the Florida Peninsula. Storm surge up to 12 feet is forecast on portions of the west coast of Florida stretching from just south of Tampa Bay to Bonita Beach. Elevated to critical conditions are expected across much of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle as sustained winds of 10-25 mph gusting 25-40 mph amid relative humidity of 15-25% develop. Elevated to locally critical conditions are likely across northeast California, southeast Oregon, and portions of the northern Great Basin as southwest winds of 15-25 mph with gusts 25-40 mph develop amid relative humidity of 10-20% ahead of a cold front. Breezy and dry south winds are also likely across much of the northern and central Plains. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are likely from southeast California and southern Arizona through the central Great Basin into the Colorado and southern Rockies. Showers are expected to spread across western Washington and Oregon, with less coverage in the Inland Northwest and northern Rockies.
