October 4, 2022 – Merced - On Sunday, October 2, 2022, at about 2:17 A.M., MPD officers responded to a report of a shooting inside a single-family home in the 200 block of E. 20th Street. Upon their merced police department logoarrival officers learned that Allen Brooks, 44, one of the home’s residents, had shot his 17-year-old son, believing him to be an intruder.

Brooks told officers that he thought that all of his family members were home and in bed when he noticed somebody moving through the backyard. When the person began coming through the door in the darkened kitchen, Brooks demanded the intruder leave and announced that he was armed. When the person continued to enter the home, Brooks fired one round from a 12-gauge shotgun. It was only after the shooting that Brooks realized he had confronted his son, whom he believed was in bed.

Officers provided lifesaving aid to the victim, addressing serious wounds to his torso, right arm, and right thigh. The victim was transported to a regional trauma facility where he underwent emergency surgery and remains in intensive care. According to MPD investigators and a representative of the Merced District Attorney’s Office that responded to the scene, interviews and physical evidence support Brook’s account of the incident.
