October 13, 2022 - Three new large fires were reported, one in South Dakota and two in Washington. Seventy-six large fires and complexes have burned 776,913 acres in six states. About 4,300 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned.
Elevated to critical fire weather conditions are expected in parts of the Plains and into the Ozarks, Ohio, Missouri and Mississippi valley today. It will also be warm and dry for most of the Great Basin, Rocky Mountain, Northern California and Northwest areas.

Strong northwest winds of 15-35 mph with gusts 30-50 mph amid low relative humidity of 12-25% will continue across much of the northern and central Plains and spread into the Ozarks, Mid and Lower Mississippi Valley, and western Ohio Valley. Critical conditions are most likely to occur across the northern and central Plains where fuels are driest, with elevated conditions likely over the Mid-Mississippi and western Ohio Valleys that have received little to no recent precipitation. Dry conditions are likely to extend into Oklahoma and central and east Texas as well, while above normal temperatures and low afternoon relative humidity of 10-25% are likely to spread across the West from the Divide to the coast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue ahead of a cold front from the east slopes of the Appalachians to the East Coast, with heavy rain and flooding possible over the Northeast. Scattered showers will continue across the Great Lakes as well, most numerous downwind of Lakes Superior and Michigan.
