School Kids Have Lower Test Scores; Seek Help

November 16, 2022 - Testing has shown school kids have lower test scores post Covid. This is a concern for educators, as well as parents.

This Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 10:00 A.M. the community is invited to the Miners Inn to hear about the situation and discover what can be done about it and how they can help. The speaker Erin Vereschaginwill be Mariposa Elementary Principal Erin Vereschagin.

Covid threw students and teachers into chaos nationwide as schools had to deal with forced closures to prevent the spread of the virus. This meant students were trying to learn from home on computers using video conferencing software such as Zoom. At the same time, teachers suddenly had to start teaching in a totally different way using devices and software they weren’t familiar with.

Sometimes students didn’t even have access to the internet and they tried sitting outside businesses that offered free internet connections. Parents tried to help their kids and while they were working from home, they could try to do this, but some parents couldn’t be at home and had to trust their kids to log into school each day.

The learning environment was so radically different that teachers found some students ignored school and didn’t do any of the work.

When it came time for annual testing, students weren’t prepared and their test scores showed a dramatic drop from pre-Covid years.

Vereschagin will discuss the situation, explain how it affected students at MES, and talk about ways to improve scores. Audience members will be able to ask questions about testing and what it might mean.

The conference room at Miners In will be available at 9:00 A.M. for those who would like to order breakfast before the meeting starts.

This forum is presented free of charge to the public by the Mariposa Democratic Club. People of all persuasions are invited to attend. Donations will be accepted to help defray the cost of the room.
