November 16, 2022 - Mariposa, California – University of California Cooperative Extension will host an informational session about the local prescribed burn association (PBA) at the South Gate Brewing on Thursday, December 8th from 5:30-7:30 pm. This event will provide an opportunity for community members to interact with PBA members, learn about prescribed fire, and hear about upcoming opportunities to volunteer with the PBA. The South Gate Brewing Company is located at 40233 Enterprise Drive, in Oakhurst.

The PBA is a group of local landowners, agency partners, and other community members throughout the southern Sierra Nevada that conduct prescribed burns on private lands. The PBA brings people together to conduct prescribed burns by pooling resources; assisting with planning, permitting, prep work, and implementation; and providing training opportunities and resources.

Prescribed burning (also known as prescribed fire) is the use of fire under predetermined conditions to meet a wide range of land management objectives. Prescribed burning is a cost-effective tool used to reduce fuels and damage from catastrophic wildfires, limit woody encroachment, improve forage for livestock production and wildlife, and manage invasive species.
