November 19, 2022 - Merced – On November 17, 2022, at approximately 3:29 P.M., the man responsible for shooting and killing 9-month-old Darius Grigsby was arrested in the city of Gilroy. Detectives identified the shooter as Daevon Jamari Motshwane (18) of Merced.
Motshwane (pictured) was hiding out at a motel in Gilroy when detectives learned of his whereabouts. Gilroy Police quickly responded to the area and set up a perimeter. Motshwane left the motel and was taken into custody without incident.
Earlier in the week, detectives followed up on information that led them to a residence Zion Canyon Court in Merced. Detectives located the vehicle used in the drive by shooting and seized it as evidence. A 17-year-old boy was also taken into custody after detectives learned he was driving the vehicle during the incident.
Darius Grigsby was shot and killed on November 9th as his mother pushed him down the street in a stroller. A maroon Chevrolet Trailblazer was captured on numerous surveillance cameras in the area, as it fled from the scene. Detectives were able to identify the license plate for the vehicle which eventually led them to identifying the suspects in this case.
Motshwane was booked into the Merced County Jail for murder, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and gang enhancements. The 17-year-old was booked into juvenile hall for murder.
This case remains under investigation.
