August 12, 2015 - SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Wild horses that have been halter trained and saddle started will be offered for public adoption Saturday, Aug. 22, as part of the Murieta Mule Classic event beginning at 9 a.m. at the Murieta Equestrian Center, 7200 Lone Pine Dr., in Rancho Murieta.

The program will offer nine 3 and 4-year-old mares. Events get underway at 9 a.m. with a meet and greet, continue with a mustang presentation at 11 a.m. and conclude with an auction at noon.

The mustangs have been trained by inmates in the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center Wild Horse Training Program, a partnership of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department and the Bureau of Land Management.

"We are really pleased with how far these mares have come," said Joe Misner, manager of the wild horse training program. "They will be great companions for anyone who loves horses."

The BLM gathered the horses from public ranges in work to maintain wild herd populations at levels that the rangelands can sustain in balance with other rangeland users and available forage and water.

The wild horse training program aims to provide initial training, benefitting the horses and their adoptive owners.
