January 9, 2023 - The Madera County Sheriff's Office reports around 11:30am on January 9, 2023, the Madera County Office of Emergency Services issued a mandatory evacuation order for residents of the Bass Lake RV Resort (39744 Road 274) due to flooding in the area.

The Bass Lake area is currently experiencing extreme weather conditions and we encourage residents to be aware of their surroundings. Mudslides, flooding, downed trees, and evacuations are all active concerns for the ongoing storm system, which is expected to last through at least Tuesday night.

An Evacuation Shelter has been opened at the Oakhurst Community Center (39800 Fresno Flats Rd.) for those impacted.

We would like to reassure residents that officials are in the field frequently monitoring conditions, to include water levels of streams, creeks, and rivers, as well as burn scar areas.

Sheriff Tyson Pogue states, “Together with our community OES partners, resources are being devoted around the clock to ensuring the safety and security of our Madera County residents.”

Due to the rapidly evolving nature of this weather system, we strongly encourage residents who may be in impacted areas to prepare NOW for potential changes.

What can residents do?

* First and foremost, it is critical that residents heed evacuation warnings from local officials. In the absence of an official notice, residents should pay attention to evolving conditions around their homes.
* Pay attention to official weather forecasts. https://www.weather.gov/hnx/
* If you live in an urban area that may be impacted by flooding, sand bags are available to residents (must bring your own shovel). Full list is on website & Facebook.

One of the most important steps you can take in preparing for hazards is to sign up for emergency alerts from MCALERT:

a. Go to www.mcalert.org to sign up for emergency alerts for your location
b. Text your zip code to 888777 to sign up for alerts in your town
Emergency alerts are targeted to your location, and are a valuable tool officials use to communicate during critical incidents including natural disasters or hazards.
