What Happens When County Offices are Closed? 

March 1, 2023 – Mariposa County officials reported that they have been getting questions from the community about what happens behind the scenes when County Offices are closed. Unfortunately, there are some misconceptions, so we're here to help clarify!

1. Mariposa County has to consider A LOT of factors when closing offices. While the top priority is staff and public safety, other things must be considered, including keeping roadways clear for our Roads Crews and reducing the number of calls to our Sheriff's Office for vehicle accidents or assistance. These factors can change from day to day or incident to incident.
   
   
2. When we close offices, we're not just playing in the snow. All Mariposa County staff are potential emergency workers and may be called on to support emergencies. Staff like Public Works, law enforcement teams, and emergency services staff report to work in person. Non-essential staff work remotely and are still available by email and voicemail. Some services can continue to be delivered as usual on an appointment basis. Side note: Remote workdays have shown to be some of our most productive days!
   
   
3. Not everyone in our community is equipped to handle extensive storms, so even if official emergency declarations aren't made, our services may shift during storms to support those in need. This includes pulling staff from some tasks to support more immediate needs.
   
   
4. Our Technical Services team has done a lot of work in recent years to make working remotely easier and more efficient for our staff. This includes improved network security, cloud-based software that allows us to access and share files from home, virtual meeting options, improved VPNs, digital signature capability, and more! Wow – they've been busy!

Things are rarely dull here in Mariposa between winter storms, fires, and more. We prefer to be open, but we have to be dynamic and flexible to live and work in this rural community. Mariposa County employees will continue to be dynamic, flexible, persistent, caring, collaborative, and community-focused in our efforts.
