Update Wednesday Morning: Fire crews plan to begin ignitions on the 150 acre Studhorse unit (south of Wawona Hotel) later this morning and into April 20. Smoke will be visible along Hwy 41 & in the community of Wawona. Please drive safely and watch for firefighters and equipment working near the roadway.

April 13, 2023 - Yosemite Fire officials are assessing conditions to conduct prescribed burning operations in the Studhorse area (south of the Wawona Hotel) next week. If conditions allow, active burning may take place on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 and Thursday, April 20, 2023. Fire crews plan to target approximately 150 acres on the northeastern side of the Wawona Road (highway 41) and will have traffic control in place.

The Washburn fire of 2022 impacted the eastern edge of the planned 150 acres and a trail safety closure remains active in the area. Fire crews plan to begin ignitions on that eastern edge and then continue to the western portion of the Studhorse area.  Please see attached map.

Burning under favorable conditions helps to create a healthier forest, improves wildlife habitats, protects infrastructure and natural resources, and lowers the risk of more dangerous fires and smoke impacts in the future. Impacts from smoke are always a consideration andburning will only be conducted under favorable dispersal conditions. Smoke will be visible along the road and in the Wawona area during active burning operations and may still be present several days after active ignitions.  Air quality information can be found online at https://fire.airnow.gov/.

TheYosemite public information map  will be updated and additional information will be posted on Yosemite Fire social media next week.
