Homicide Investigation
May 12, 2023 - Fresno Police Department officials report that on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at 1:49 a.m., Central Policing District officers responded to the 600 block of North Fresno Street for two Shot Spotter activations of multiple rounds. Officers arrived and found 45-year-old Nathaniel Castaneda in front of the location, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Castaneda was transported to Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) where he was pronounced deceased at 2:18 a.m. Officers also located a second shooting victim on White Avenue, west of Fresno Street. The second shooting victim, a 33-year-old African American male, was transported to CRMC where he received treatment for a single gunshot wound to the upper body and is currently listed in stable condition.
Detectives responded to the scene and learned two individuals were involved in a verbal argument in front of the location, which led to the gunfire. During the gunfire, both individuals were shot. Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses to the shooting and reviewing video footage of the incident to identify the parties involved and are asking anyone with information to contact the Fresno Police Department. Although early in the investigation, this homicide has been determined to be the City’s Eighth murder of the year compared to 19 murders this same time last year.
