May 12, 2023 - National Weather Service Hanford Office officials report high temperatures throughout Central California Saturday afternoon will be seven to nine degrees hotter than this afternoon.
Maximum temperatures across Central California Sunday afternoon will be about fifteen degrees above normal for this time of year.

.SYNOPSIS...
Warming will start to ramp up this afternoon, with the San Joaquin
Valley expected to reach temperatures in the mid to high 80's.
Temperatures in the mid to high 90's are expected to start
tomorrow and will continue through next week, with Sunday and
Monday being the warmest days in the high 90's and possibly
reaching the triple digits for the first time this year. The
Sierra Nevada may also see a few thunderstorms in the afternoons
starting on Sunday and continuing through the week.

.DISCUSSION...
A strong upper level ridge has settled over Canada and is causing
a warming trend in our CWA, with unseasonably high temperatures
expected this weekend and into next week. The San Joaquin Valley
will see high temperatures in the mid to high 90's beginning
today and continuing through next week. The warmest day are
expected to be Sunday and Monday with most of the valley in the
high 90's and some locations possibly hitting 100 degrees. A Heat
Advisory will be in effect from Saturday at noon through Monday at
8 PM.
Here's the 4.1 NBM probabilities for high temperatures reaching
100 degrees or above in some of our valley locations:
Fresno: 46%
Hanford: 36%
Visalia: 36%
Lemoore: 26%
Merced: 26%
Madera:21%
Bakersfield: 16%
Delano: 16%
Porterville: 16%
Reedley: 16%
The high temperatures in the valley will correlate with higher
temperatures in the Sierra Nevada, and this will lead to melting
of the snowpack up there. This will cause rivers and streams to
run high and possibly flood. Be cautious around these rivers and
streams as they will be running high and fast, and will also be
very cold.
The Sierra Nevada may see a few thunderstorms in the afternoon
starting on Sunday and may see them in the afternoon throughout
the week, as instability grows from the warm temperatures. The
chance for thunderstorms is around 15-25% for the mountains this
Sunday and through the next week.
