May 13, 2023 - Two new large fires were reported in New Mexico yesterday. Nationally, large fires in Florida, New Mexico and North Carolina have burned 47,901 acres.
So far in 2023, more than 14,200 wildfires were caused by people and about 389,000 acres burned. Lightning has ignited 142 wildfires and burned about 54,000 acres. The states with the most human-caused wildfires are North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Wildland firefighters and support personnel need your help to prevent wildfires.

Scattered to widespread thunderstorms, including heavy rain, are expected on the northern into the central Plains today into tomorrow. Widespread thunderstorms are expected across much of the southern Plains and Texas through the weekend, with more scattered showers and thunderstorms in the broader Four Corners region over the weekend. Severe thunderstorms are likely across portions of the Plains and Mississippi Valley today and tomorrow, with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms across most of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, Southeast, central and southern Appalachians, and into the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest through the weekend. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are likely in parts of New England today, but relative humidity will lower and combine with breezy winds Saturday – Sunday. Hot, unstable, breezy, and relatively dry conditions will spread from Florida into the Carolinas, with daily chances of afternoon thunderstorms. Chances of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will shift and expand west and north in the Intermountain West this weekend, with well above normal temperatures on the West Coast and in the northern Intermountain West.
