September 17, 2015 - The CHP reports on Thursday morning, September 17, 2015 at 5:30 A.M. on Highway 140 east of Colorado Road in Mariposa County a major injury accident took place.
Richie Nicol, 27, of Aberdeen, Scotland was driving a 2014 Chevrolet rental vehicle westbound on Highway 140 in the wrong lane (Mr. Nicol was driving westbound in the eastbound lane.) Sterling Johnson, 77, of Mariposa was driving a 2009 Honda east on Highway 140 in the eastbound lane as Mr. Nicol was approaching him. A head on collision occurred as both drivers were unable to avoid the other.
Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles until EMS personnel arrived on the scene and removed them.
Both drivers were using their seatbelts and suffered broken bones and were transported to hospitals outside of Mariposa.
Mr. Nicol was transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto while Mr. Johnson was taken to Memorial North in Modesto.
The CHP reported the accident is still under investigation but neither drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
