Homicide Investigation and Arrest 

June 3, 2023 - Fresno Police Department officials report that on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, shortly after 12:30 p.m., Southwest Policing District officers responded to The Poverello House, located at 412 F Street, for a stabbing victim. Officers located 44-year-old Steven Christian suffering from a stab wound to his chest. Christian was transported to CRMC where he was rushed into surgery. After hours-long surgery, he succumbed to his injuries.

Homicide detectives learned that the incident occurred in front of several people that were using the facilities. Several staff members from the Poverello House detained the suspect as he ran from the scene. The suspect was identified as 45-year-old Daniel Salinas. Salinas was booked into the Fresno County Jail on one count of murder. Several witnesses identified Salinas as the person who confronted the victim and ultimately stabbed him. Both the victim and Salinas are members of the unhoused community. Investigators are reviewing video surveillance from the location to determine the motive for the crime.
