June 3, 2023 - One new large fire was reported in New Jersey. Nationally, seven large fires have burned 66,209 acres in six states. Since firefighters credit nifcJanuary 1, 18,403 wildfires have burned 518,698 acres across the United States. These numbers are slightly below the 10-year average of 21,908 wildfires and 1,016,684 acres burned. 

The National Interagency Coordination Center continues to work with the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center to support ongoing wildfires in Alberta and British Columbia. Resources from the United States include interagency hotshot crews, incident management teams, equipment and supplies.

Weather

Above normal temperatures with low relative humidity will continue across much of the Great Lakes into the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic with moderate significant fire potential through the weekend. Scattered mainly wet thunderstorms will develop over northern and eastern New England late in the day and overnight with areas of wetting rain followed by cooler temperatures for much of the Northeast this weekend. Breezy and dry north winds are likely this weekend over portions of the Mid-Atlantic keeping fire potential low to moderate. Wet thunderstorms are also forecast for much of the Plains into the western Mississippi Valley through the weekend, with severe thunderstorms and heavy rain likely across the southern High Plains. Scattered thunderstorms will develop from the Sierra through the Great Basin into the Rockies with the most widespread storms, heaviest rain, and potential flooding across portions of Wyoming and central Montana today. Dry and locally breezy conditions will continue in the Southwest while above normal temperatures and low afternoon relative humidity below 20% are expected in the Inland Northwest and Idaho Panhandle. Below normal temperatures and showery conditions will continue for another day in Alaska with gradual drying and warming for the weekend.
